I wrote this article in 2010 when I was working as a Head of Media for Bloom UP Communications. I received a few messages asking me a copy of the newspaper, so here is the article in full.

Graviola (Annona muricata) – Brazilian Paw Paw

Cancer & Pain Free

All my days I grew up among the wise, and I have not found what is good for the body other than silence (Ethics of the Fathers1:17).

Lets back to January of 2004. I was leaving international journalism and starting a new challenge. When I was a trainee still, I met for the first time one from my first patients. I need to confess all of it was really hard to me because I was so sensitive and somehow I could few their pain on my skin. Since then, and studying with no stop I tried create a different treatment and routine to each person, putting together all the ‘skills’ I had about alternatives medicine and natural ‘escapes’ I learnt from my Latin culture.
Ana*1, was recognized as a terminal cancer patient and for a few years been looking for alternatives to ‘kill’ her pain. I start her treatment with known teas to calm her down – Herbalism and Flower Remedies. With any success, I was studying acupuncture and it was my next step. She also become my very first costumer who I used Chromopuncture (Eletric Crystal Bar)*2.

She always smiling and saying “It is getting better” but I knew wasn’t true. After we tried Shiatsu, Thai-pinda, Sea-therapy and Hot-stones. Nothing…. I want to give up of all and back to my journalism, but I decided to carry on in my challenge. The first improvement we got was using Aromatherapy.*3 Chamomile was the main oil on my potions for her bath, sprays for the house, oil burners, incenses, body oils and another skin care and my massages. I prepared by myself all the products and I was seen her evolution day by day.
I believed on the time Beauty therapy could help, putting her confidence up. Goal! With no doubt, she was a woman 100% self-confident then, but the pain was there still.

One year on this case and completely shaked I decided take a time of all in a small native island in Brazil called Ilha Bella. Touching the same nature where I born, I could find some piece to thing about how fragil life is when a old friend introduce me a old native Indian to wash and protect my body from the “bad spririts”.

As a really good Brazilian Portuguese Speaker, I couldn’t understand well what he was saying because he grown in dialets but he could understand all my fears with his heart. In his bad language he gave me a small fruit called graviola (Brazilian Paw Paw – Annona Muricata) in the leaves and advise me to make a strong tea using the leaves and offer daily to “my friend” in cancer pain. Quick I put the fresh fruit in my bag and on my thoughts I just read …..”Old believes”. Anyway, I back to the hotel and as a curious researcher I am, the first place I sit myself was in front of a laptop, and there I was until the day next start again…. I couldn’t believe what I was reading all night about graviola leaves…. “CANCER MAGIC BULLET DISCOVERED, but drug giants hushes it up! – 10,000 times stronger than chemotherapy with no adverse side effects”
Graviola is small evergreen tree that is about 5-6 meters in height. The leaves, fruits, bark, roots and seeds of this plant have excellent medicinal properties, and have been in use for centuries as indigenous medicines. Graviola is used to relieve spasms and reduce depression. The bark, leaves and roots of Graviola have sedative, antispasmodic and hypotensive properties.*4

Another common names of graviola are: Pinha na Guine Bissau*7, Brazilian Paw Paw, Corossolier,  Durian benggala, Guanabana, Guanavana, Graviola, Nangka blanda, Nangka londa, Toge-Banreisi, Soursop and the parts used are the fruit, the seeds and the leaves. *6 Personal, I could compare it as a Brazilian Tea-Tree. As well as the Australian herb – Melaleuca, it is “good to almost everything”, well known as a “1st aid on a bottle”. Or Neen, the herb called in India as a ‘’local pharmacia’’.

Graviola also is Antibacterial, Anticancerous, Antiparasitic, Antitumorous, Antispasmodic, Astringent, Cytotoxic, Diuretic, Febrifuge, Hypotensive, Insecticide, Nervine, Pectoral, Piscicide, Sedative, Stomachic, Vasodilator, Vermifuge; used as analgesic, in asthma combat, helps on childbirth, calms fevers, helps flu, gall-bladder, hypertension and high blood pressure, palpitation and nervous, aids rheumatism, arthritis, neuragia and it is brilliant to skin diseases and general problems.*5

On those later days, have been shown in research to inhibit the Herpes Simplex virus. *8

Broccoli sprouts are said to be 20 times better than broccoli in preventing cancer. North American J.H. University School of Medicine found that the sulforaphane GS (sgs™) in  broccoli sprouts “may reduce the risk of cancer, a disease of many factors” according to their group, the Brassica Foundation. So they bred broccoli high in this phytochemical and patented it. Sulforaphane is a phytochemical like annonaceous acetogenins.
Graviola selectively kills colon cancer cells at “10,000 times the potency of Adriamycin.” That is a very effective chemotherapy drug. Graviola is extremely effective in isolating and killing lung cancer cells. According to one study conducted at Catholic University of South Korea, scientists discovered that two chemicals extracted from graviola seeds targeted and killed malignant breast and colon cells in a test tube.
In at least 20 laboratory tests since the 1970s, graviola has been proven to hunt down and kill cancer cells in the prostate, lung, breast, colon and pancreas. Purdue researchers found that leaves from the graviola tree kills cancer cells “among six human-cell lines” and are especially effective against prostate and pancreatic cancer cells.
