I want to know if you can sit with pain, I want to know if you can be with joy, It doesn’t interest me if the story you are telling me is true. I want to know if you can see beauty I want to know if you can live with failure, It doesn’t interest me to know where you live or how much money you have. It doesn’t interest me who you are, how you came to be here. It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. \nI want to know what you ache for,
\nAnd if you dare to dream of meeting
\nYour heart’s longing.<\/p>\n
\nI want to know if you will risk looking like a fool
\nFor love, for your dream,
\nFor the adventure of being alive.<\/p>\n
\nI want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow,
\nIf you have been opened by life’s betrayals,
\nOr have become shriveled and closed from fear of further pain.<\/p>\n
\nMine or your own,
\nWithout moving
\nTo hide it or fade it or fix it.<\/p>\n
\nMine or your own,
\nIf you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes
\nWithout cautioning us to be careful, be realistic, to remember the limitations of being human.<\/p>\n
\nI want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself,
\nIf you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul.
\nI want to know if you can be faithless and therefore be trustworthy.<\/p>\n
\nEven when it is not pretty every day,
\nAnd if you can source your own life
\nFrom its presence.<\/p>\n
\nYours and mine,
\nAnd still stand on the edge of a lake and shout to the silver of the full moon,
\n“Yes!”<\/p>\n
\nI want to know if you can get up after the night of grief and despair,
\nWeary and bruised to the bone,
\nAnd do what needs to be done for the children.<\/p>\n
\nI want to know if you will stand
\nIn the center of the fire with me
\nAnd not shrink back.<\/p>\n
\nI want to know what sustains you
\nFrom the inside
\nWhen all else falls away.<\/p>\n
\nWith yourself,
\nAnd if you truly like the company you keep
