A useful mnemonic rhyme for memorising the order of succession to the English Throne, from William the Conquerer (in 1066) right through to the present day:<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Willie, Willie, Harry, Stee,
\nHarry, Dick, John, Harry Three,
\nOne-To-Three Neds, Richard Two,
\nHarrys Four-Five-Six… then who?<\/p>\n

Edwards Four-Five, Dick the Bad,
\nHarrys (twain), Ned Six (the lad),
\nMary, Bessie, James you ken,
\nThen Charlie, Charlie, James again…<\/p>\n

Will & Mary, Anne of gloria,
\nGeorges (\u00a04!\u00a0), Will Four, Victoria,
\nEdward Seven next, and then
\nCame George the Fifth in 1910…<\/p>\n

Ned the Eighth soon abdicated,
\nSo George Six was coronated,
\nThen Number Two Elizabeth…
\nAnd that’s all, folks (until her death…)!!<\/p>\n

And if the present line of succession holds, a substitute last-line will doubtless eventually become:<\/p>\n

Charles Three (and now I’m out of breath…!)<\/p>\n

The origin of the rhyme is unknown but it may be about a century old as different endings seem to have been extended to cover the last few monarchs. One shortened alternative sometimes quoted for the end of the rhyme after Victoria<\/em> is:<\/p>\n

Edward Seven, Georgie Five,
\nEdward, George, and Liz (alive).<\/p>\n

Translated into names, the order of succession is:<\/p>\n
